Case Overview

A U.S. citizen reached out to our team after learning that an INTERPOL Blue Notice had been issued against him, falsely labeling him as involved in sex trafficking. The issue arose after a brief encounter in Medellín, Colombia, where the client was detained for attempting to purchase a small amount of marijuana. Unknown to him at the time, the individuals involved were minors. No illicit conduct occurred, and he was released within 12 hours without charges.

Despite the absence of legal proceedings, the client returned to Ohio only to discover that his name was being publicly linked to serious accusations, including trafficking, and that an INTERPOL alert had been issued. The situation caused severe reputational damage and emotional distress. The client retained local legal counsel but sought international legal expertise to ensure his full protection and name clearance.

Legal Strategy: Contesting Inaccurate INTERPOL Blue Notices

Blue Notices are intended to help authorities locate or obtain information about individuals, but they are not arrest warrants. However, they can severely harm reputation, especially when based on unverified or misleading claims. In this case, the notice appeared to be issued prematurely and without sufficient legal foundation, causing disproportionate damage to the client’s life and livelihood.

Under the guidance of Dr. Anatoliy Yarovyi, we conducted a detailed analysis of the Colombian incident and legal procedures. The absence of formal charges, the immediate release, and lack of follow-up by Colombian authorities served as critical arguments in our filing to INTERPOL’s Commission for the Control of Files (CCF).

We prepared a formal request for deletion of the INTERPOL Blue Notice, emphasizing the reputational and mental toll, the violation of INTERPOL’s data protection principles, and the disproportionate labeling of the client as a trafficker. Supporting documentation included police reports, travel records, and psychological impact statements.

Result

The CCF has acknowledged receipt of the submission and launched a case review. In the meantime, the client was provided with legal documentation that may assist if confronted during travel or background checks. The goal remains clear: to remove the unjust notice, restore the client’s reputation, and prevent future misuse of INTERPOL systems based on incomplete or misleading allegations.
